Anvelt joined Social Democrats in April 2009, saying that he was a man of action. "With my 40 years, I have seen a lot in life and have my clear world outlook and understanding of what is happening. There are two options: to sit behind the TV and .. the situation in the state and in politics on a daily basis, or to get involved and contribute personally to the country and society. This is a question of choice and this is the choice that I made."
There are about 800 Social Democrats registered in the Tallinn district.
