The plan of Latvian national airline airBaltic to become a major competitor for Estonian Air and set up a base in Tallinn is controversial and non-functional, according to Rauno Parras, vice president of commercial affairs in Estonian Air.

Parras told aripaev.ee that there is nothing bad in increasing competition in civil aviation, but in this case would affect rather than be beneficial for air travel.

"The more there are different colours of planes taking off from Tallinn the better. A large number of destinations and service providers increases access to Estonia and is very  important in implementing the transport and tourism policy. This is good both for customers and service providers. But we must make sure that competition is fair and transparent," said Parras in comment to the statement made by airBaltic's Chief Executive Officer Bertolt Flick that airBaltic remains open to talks about cooperation with Estonian Air, which has reported losses for the past three years and is seeking a strategic partner to survive.

Parras said that expanding into neighouring  markets was inevitable for airlines in the current market situation. "Also Estonian Air has made a step in this direction and expanded its operations to Lithuania. Last month we started cooperation KLM, one of the world's largest airlines, on the Vilnius-Amsterdam line," he said.

Parras added that Estonian Air was the only airline whose main objective is to develop air connections from Estonia to the rest of the world while the key interest of airBaltic and Riga Airport is to make Riga the main hub for as many passengers as possible including Estonians and Lithuanians.

He said that there is a recent example from Lithuania where the aggressive policies pursued by airBaltic practically cut off Lithuania from the map of connections for several months and which has required immense efforts from the Lithuania state to re-open the connections.

airBaltic has announced plans to launch eight new routes from Tallinn this year. Five of the new routes will connect Tallinn with locations in Finland.
